- Emergency plan & first aid
CE Credits: Cal/OSHA and the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE) will provide two hours of continuing education credit to attendees, which may be applied towards the Farm Labor Contractor license training requirements.

When are employees covered by Workers’ Compensation?
In California, Workers’ Compensation coverage generally begins the first minute an employee is on the job and continues any time they are officially on the job performing a service for the company as an employee or official volunteer. Workers’ Compensation does not provide coverage for injuries that occur during the normal commute to or from work; that occur during an unpaid mealtime; that result from recreational activities; that result from substance abuse or intoxication; or that result from starting a physical fight or engaging in horseplay.

Governor Brown recently signed AB 469, the Wage Theft Protection Act of 2011, into law. The act adds language to Labor Code Section 2810.5 which requires additional information to be included in newhire packets for all non-exempt employees in California (with the exception of public employees).

The California Division of Workers’ Compensation announced last Friday (10/21/2011) that maximum Total Temporary Disability (TTD) benefits will increase to $1010.50 per week (tax free) in 2012. TTD benefits are paid to workers who are temporarily unable to work at all due to a workplace injury. Because the benefits are paid tax free, the increase means that anyone earning up to $78,898 per year will be getting roughly the same amount of take home pay while they are out on Workers’ Compensation TTD. Now there is less incentive for most injured workers to get back to work because they can make the same amount while sitting at home.

In our last post in the series, How to read your California Workers’ Compensation Experience Modification Worksheet, we told you that there are two tactics for reducing your Ex Mod: preventing claims before they happen, and managing them once they do. In this post, we go into more detail about why and how good claim management lowers your Ex Mod and your overall Workers’ Compensation costs. Recall that your Ex Mod is a factor multiplied directly by your unmodified premium to produce your final premium. A lower Ex Mod directly lowers your premium.
